The Art of Perfect Shimming:
One of the main causes of breakage, premature wear and that annoying mechanical "squeal" in replicas (even brand new ones) is inadequate shimming. Perfectly aligning the gears inside the gearbox eliminates axial play, reduces friction on the bearings and makes the mechanics incredibly smooth and quiet. With this massive 60-piece set provided by RetroArms, you'll have maximum freedom of action to achieve perfect tolerances on your AEG's mechanics.
The Laser Etching Revolution:
Anyone who has ever shimmed a gearbox knows the drama: a shim falls on the table, gets mixed up with the others, and you have to pick up the digital caliper to figure out if it was a 0.1 or a 0.2 mm. RetroArms has solved this problem at the root by laser-etching the exact measurement directly onto the face of each individual stainless steel shim. A seemingly simple innovation, but one that halves the working time and eliminates frustrations on the bench!
Organization First: The laser etching genius will save your life, but order on the workbench is everything! When disassembling a gearbox, we advise you to write down on a sheet how many shims (and of what size) you are putting under and over each individual gear (bevel gear, spur gear, sector gear). If you have to reopen everything to do a test, you will know exactly how to recreate your setup!
The Importance of 0.1 mm: Don't underestimate the 0.1 mm shims! When you think the gear is spinning well but you feel it has a very slight "play" (wobbles) if you push the shaft with your finger, it is that tenth of a millimeter shim that will make the difference between an "ok" job and a shimming job worthy of a true custom master.
No "Sandwich" Shims on the Bearing: Make sure that the diameter of the shim rests only on the inner race of the ball bearing (or bushing) and does not rub on the outer part or on the gearbox shell. RetroArms steel is very precise, but if your gearbox has hollowed or deformed bushings, always check that the gear rotates freely with a touch of your finger with the shells closed (and screwed!).
