Adding a shim or shims to your valve reduces the valve travel. Reducing the stroke creates a smaller opening resulting in less airflow.
A collateral benefit of the reduced stroke is that it also reduces the time it takes to fully close once the solenoid is turned off. This allows you to raise the DP slightly for greater reliability without sacrificing air efficiency.
And since everyone's setup is unique, the multiple shims allow you to dial in just the right amount of flow restriction for your particular HPA without the expense of purchasing multiple Poppets.
